Multi-stage Hike: Hocheifel Panorama Trail (Adenau - Insul)

From the historic market square in Adenau , the route leads out of the picturesque Johanniter town through the Hüstert hiking parking lot. Through dense, dreamy woods, the trail soon climbs steadily from the idyllic valley floodplain up to the Reifferscheid hills. Winding through fields and meadows, the route leads to the unique viewpoint Hürstnück, a nature reserve featuring rare heathland and nutrient-poor grassland areas. Looking back, the region’s highest peaks stand out strikingly on the horizon: the Hohe Acht, the Nürburg Castle Ruins with the Nürburgring define the landscape of the wild and romantic High Eifel.

The imposing Aremberg already looms ahead of us, a mighty testament to the volcanic past of the Tertiary Period. Magnificent panoramic views stretching from the Winnerather Höhe to the Siebengebirge enchant hikers until the trail winds back down through the dense deciduous forest into the valley toward the tranquil Eifel village of Insul.

Highlights along the way:

We leave the market square in Adenau, keep to the right at first, and cross the main street at the crosswalk near Rossmann to reach the opposite side. After about 400 m, at the roundabout, we follow Blankenheimer Straße out of town until, after about 350 m, we reach the Hüstert hiking parking lot; from there, we follow the Eulenweg nature trail straight ahead for about 600 m. About 200 m past the next left-hand curve, a steep path leads to the right for about 80 m downhill. At the end of the steep path, we first keep to the right and then, after another 50 m, turn left again, passing the fishing ponds on our left and right, and turn right at the next fork. The route continues straight ahead over a small bridge until we come to a paved section of the path. Here, we turn sharply left at the small wayside shrine and follow the signposted route straight ahead, steadily uphill. At the next opportunity, we keep to the left by crossing the small bridge. At the end of the short steep section, we turn right again and follow the farm road to the next bridge. We cross this bridge as well, and then turn left again. After the steep climb on the gravel path, we turn right again and continue at a slightly more moderate pace through the forest toward Reifferscheid. After a sharp left turn, the route reaches the forest road in the village of Reifferscheid. There, we turn left onto Am Knopp. Here, we turn right again onto Ellerstraße, which we follow to the left at the next intersection. Then we follow Euskirchener Straße to the right for a very short distance and turn right onto the paved road toward Lückenbach.
After about 200 m, we follow the left curve and, after 400 m, leave the paved road to turn slightly left onto a meadow path. We follow this path for 500 m before taking a sharp left at the end; after 200 m, we follow the sharp right curve and walk straight ahead for 200 m. We turn left at a 90° angle and hike 500 m straight uphill between fields and meadows to the Hürstnück hill. On the ridge, we first head left and, shortly past the bench, turn right again downhill, passing the small grove on the left; at the next fork, we turn right again, and after 100 m, the route veers left to lead straight on to Winnerath. Once we reach the outskirts of Winnerath, we turn left onto Martinsnück Street. At the next intersection, take a sharp left and then another sharp right onto Kapellenstraße until we reach the town limits. Here, continue along the paved road. After 1.3 km, turn left into the forest. We follow the forest path straight ahead for about 2 km and then follow the sharp left turn further downhill through the forest toward Insul. Upon reaching the outskirts of the village, we first turn right until, after 300 m, we turn left again onto Kapellenstraße back to the starting point.

The route is signposted throughout with the trail logo and can also be hiked in the opposite direction. Public transportation connections on weekdays are available via Line 865 between Insul and Adenau www.vrminfo.de
