Grand Castle Tour
The Grand Castle Loop runs around the castle ruins. Starting at the Nürburg Castle ruins, the route heads down Burgstraße until it turns right onto Lächenweg. Along Lächenweg, you’ll find beautiful views. To the right, hidden in a wooded area, lies the Burgweiherhütte, which invites you to take a short break. The Burgweiher pond, right next to the hut, is shaded and enchants with its tranquility. From there, the trail heads uphill again, past the former T-bar lift—remnants of which are still visible—to the Steintränke, which has been extensively restored by the municipality. An information sign for the “In the Footsteps of the Green Hell” hiking route provides details about volcanism in the Eifel. At this point in the hike, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view across the Eifel. Back on Burgstraße, with a view of the Nürburgring, the trail climbs gently back to the starting point at the Nürburg Castle ruins. The route is suitable for families with strollers!
We start at Burgplatz and walk along Burgstraße toward the town center. After about 500 m, we turn onto Lächenweg. We follow Lächenweg until we see the Burgweiherhütte on our right, hidden in the woods. After a brief detour to the Burgweiherhütte, we can already see the ascending path that leads us to the Steintränke. With the Steintränke on our left, we reach Burgstraße and turn right there. After about 300 m, the road branches off toward the starting point at Burgplatz.
The route is signposted throughout with the “Große Burgrunde” trail marker.
