Ahr cycle path

Discover the Ahr valley on two wheels

It was a paradise for leisure cyclists - the Ahr cycle path. It meanders for almost 80 kilometres through the varied landscape of the Ahr Valley, almost always alongside the river. During the flood, the cycle route along the Middle Ahr in particular was severely damaged or completely destroyed in places. The Ahr cycle path is currently open again on the section between Blankenheim and Ahrbrück and between Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and Sinzig with diversions. Reconstruction of the destroyed sections is underway, but it will still take some time to prepare a new Ahr cycle path.

Section from Blankenheim to Ahrbrück: fully passable

From Blankenheim to Fuchshofen, the Ahr cycle path is once again passable. In Antweiler, it still runs through the town centre until a destroyed section is restored.

Between Fuchshofen and Schuld, cycle traffic is carried on the main road, and along the L73, the planning for the construction of an off-road cycle path, which began before the flood, is being continued. There is currently a large construction site in the centre of Schuld where cyclists have to dismount.

On the section from Schuld to Ahrbrück, the cycle path is once again fully passable.

Diversion in Insul from 11.07.2025:Due to the ongoing construction work in the area of the sports field in Insul, the previous section of the Ahr cycle path (above the sports field on the map attached) has now been closed. The new route through the village of Insul (Überdorfstr./Brückenstr./Zum Sportplatz) has therefore been signposted with immediate effect.

Ahrradweg
Ahrbrück to Walporzheim section:under reconstruction

The cycle path between Ahrbrück and Pützfeld is expected to be closed for an extended period from January 2025. The existing cycle bus route 844 (Altenahr-Rheinbach) has been extended to Ahrbrück, meaning that an alternative service already exists for this section. This bus route is equipped with bicycle trailers so that a limited number of bicycles can be taken along. The 844 cycle bus runs between April and November.

The section between Pützfeld and Kreuzberg is generally passable.

The cycle path between Kreuzberg and Altenburg is closed due to construction work. It is possible to bridge the construction site sections with bus route 860 and travel directly to Altenahr or Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.

Cycle bus service along the Mittelahr

No safe route through the Ahr valley can currently be recommended for the section between Altenahr and Walporzheim . This heavily damaged section will not be suitable for cycle traffic in the next few years due to the intensive construction work in the valley. It is not recommended for cyclists to use the main road 267 due to the high volume of traffic. It is not possible to take bicycles on the rail replacement service in the valley.

From April to the end of October, a cycle-hiking bus (899) runs between Blankenheim and Ahrweiler. This runs along the Ahr cycle path.

At the same time, the LBM project office is working intensively with Deutsche Bahn on the reconstruction of the cycle path in the valley. The railway and cycle path structures are to be rebuilt together.
