"AW-bike" hire bike offer

District-wide e-bike hire system

Convenient, environmentally friendly and flexible - since March 2024, the district of Ahrweiler has been offering an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to car transport and a perfect complement to local public transport: 80 rental e-bikes are available to locals, commuters and guests. This exciting project is being realised in cooperation with the Rhine-Moselle Transport Association (VRM) and the renowned European bike-sharing provider "nextbike".

The hire stations can be found at around 20 strategically important locations in the Ahrweiler district, mainly at railway stations and public transport stops.

How can I hire an AW-bike?

The easiest way to hire AW-bikes is via the "nextbike app" (available free of charge in all popular app stores).

To get started, you need to register once with nextbike. This is possible from the age of 16 and requires a valid means of payment such as credit card or PayPal. As soon as your customer account is activated, you can get started.
With your registered account, you can simply scan the QR code on the rear wheel cover of the e-bike and open the frame lock using your smartphone camera. Once registered, you can also use your nextbike account to hire bikes in around 300 other cities (e.g. Bonn, Euskirchen, Rheinbach and Cologne). Up to four e-bikes can be rented at the same time per customer account.

The AW-bikes are not intended for longer trips, but rather for short journeys that are not served by public transport. It is a system linked to the public transport system.

How much does it cost me to use an AW-bike?

The rental fee for occasional users in the basic tariff is two euros for the first 30 minutes, with 1.50 euros per additional half hour. The maximum daily rate is 18 euros.

Residents of the district and holders of a public transport subscription benefit from discounted monthly or annual tariffs. For them, the costs amount to just twelve euros per month or 60 euros per year, compared to the regular prices of 15 euros per month or 80 euros per year. In addition, customers who take out a monthly or annual plan receive the first 30 minutes of each rental free of charge and then only pay one euro per additional half hour (up to a maximum of 18 euros per day).

Until 31 December 2024, all interested parties have the opportunity to test the AW-bike free of charge for a half-hour ride by entering the voucher code "AW4FREE" in the app.

Where can I return my AW-bike and is there anything I need to bear in mind?

The e-bikes can only be rented and returned at fixed stations. All locations are clearly displayed on a map in the app.
The bike does not necessarily have to be returned to the same station where it was rented. Bikes are regularly available at most stations. There are also additional return stations at locations of particular interest. The easiest way to find these is to mark them in the nextbike app and in most cases they are signposted on site. However, bikes can also be rented at the drop-off stations, depending on availability.

In the nextbike app, users can view the current availability of the bikes at the stations and the respective battery charge status at any time. This is also possible without registering and entering a payment method in the app.

Please note: The parking of an AW-bike outside of the regular stations incurs a flat-rate service fee of 20 euros!
