In the picturesque Ahr valley, the only castle in the region that is still inhabited rises on a striking rock above Altenahr-Kreuzberg: Kreuzberg Castle. It has been owned by the von Boeselager family for almost 200 years and was unaffected by the floods of 2021. The origins of the castle date back to the 14th century, when the triangular ground plan was perfectly adapted to the rocky plateau. Today, the white-painted round keep and the baroque residential building made of quarry stone are reminders of its eventful history.

<span style="font-size: 1rem;">The castle was once a fief of the Archbishopric of Cologne and changed hands several times until the end of the Thirty Years' War, which repeatedly led to disputes. Important noble families such as the von Gymnich, Nesselrode, von der Heyden and von der Leyen families were among the owners. After its destruction in 1686, the castle was rebuilt in the 18th century.< The castle is still privately owned today.
