Blankenheim - Source of the Ahr - Eifel Museum - Onerahreck Viaduct - Freilinger See

Already the first stage impresses with its wealth of natural monuments and cultural treasures. The source of the Ahr in Blankenheim forms the starting point of the first stage. Passing the Eifel Museum and the Roman road information center, one strolls through alleys, along the Swan Pond, following the upper course of the Ahr. Then it goes through the railway underpass. Now it becomes more demanding and you hike steeply uphill. Through dense beech groves, you reach the plateau of the Birker Berg. Spectacular views of the southern Eifel heights reward the ascent. Passing fields, across quiet forest paths of the 484-meter-high Bohrberg, you reach the shore of the Freilinger See.

Route 899 RadWanderBus Oberes Ahrtal (RVK) valid from 01/08/2024 - 31/10/2024 Blankenheim - Aremberg - Altenahr - Ahrweiler

From 1 August 2024, line 899 will be partially extended to Ahrweiler and will operate here as a RadWanderBus.

In future, a RadWanderBus (line 899) will run between Altenahr, Ahrbrück, Schuld, Müsch and Blankenheim along the Ahr Valley cycle path from April to October, on which up to 20 bicycles can be taken on a separate trailer - preferably after booking online.

Transitionally, some RadBus journeys also serve the towns between Ahrbrück and Ahrweiler along the Mittelahr until the Ahr Valley Railway is reopened on this section.

Line 899 can therefore be used as a feeder or return route for the Ahr cycle path in the direction of the Upper and Lower Ahr Valley. Other long-distance cycle routes such as the Eifel volcano cycle route from Dümpelfeld towards Adenau/Nürburgring, the Kalkeifel cycle route from Ahrdorf towards Hillesheim, the Erft cycle route from Schuld towards Bad Münstereifel or the Rhine cycle route from Sinzig towards the Upper Ahr Valley are also connected. Of course, the line can also be used by hikers to explore the AhrSteig or the red wine hiking trail.
