Once the most secret building in the Federal Republic of Germany
Hidden in a 20-kilometre-long tunnel under the vineyards between Ahrweiler and Dernau was once the most secret building in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its official name was the "temporary headquarters of the constitutional organs of the Federal Republic of Germany in times of crisis and war" - known as the "government bunker" for short. Here you can go on an exciting journey of discovery into the time of the East-West conflict.
The former government bunker in the Ahr valley opened its nuclear bomb-proof doors as a museum in March 2008. The Dokumentationsstätte Regierungsbunker shows original parts of the most secret building in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
On an approx. 90-minute guided tour through the underground worlds of the bunker, visitors gain an insight into the original locations and learn exciting stories about the time. As the tour times depend on the number of visitors, a visit in the morning is recommended.
Opening hours with guided tours for individual visitors
April to the end of October:
Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 10 am and 4 pm
March & November
Saturdays and Sundays 11am, 1pm and 3pm
December to February
Saturdays and Sundays 12 noon and 2 pm
Tickets for guided tours can be purchased online and at the museum ticket office on site.
This brings the Cold War period to life:
- 2 railway tunnels under the vineyards, almost 20 kilometres long, were converted into nuclear bomb-proof bunkers between 1962 and 1971
- 203 metres of the former facility have been preserved as a documentation site since 2008
- 2 MAN gates including bypass locks and decontamination rooms
- Former work rooms such as the presidential office
- Insights into the door control, communication and electrical centre
- Living rooms and bedrooms, washrooms and kitchen
- A partially authentically furnished medical centre
- Photos and guided tours document the Cold War era
