Church of St. Martin
Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler
Catholic parish church in Heppingen
Heppingen initially only had one chapel, which was renovated in 1650 and had to be demolished in 1694 due to dilapidation. It was built in 1905 by architect Peter Marx on Landskroner Straße in Heppingen and is owned by the Catholic parish of St Martinus. The church was consecrated on 11 November 1905 after just 15 months of construction.
The mainly Catholic inhabitants of Heppingen had previously celebrated Sunday services either in St Willibrordus in Beul or, from the middle of the 13th century, also in St Mauritius in Heimersheim. The number of people attending church services had risen sharply in the decades before and after 1900 and churches were extended or even rebuilt almost everywhere in the Ahr district, as the available space was no longer sufficient for the faithful.
In view of this development, it seemed obvious to build a separate parish church for Heppingen, especially as the court chapel of Pantaleonshof had already celebrated its last mass from Heimersheim on 29 December 1894 and was subsequently closed due to dilapidation. This led to the founding of the "St. Martinus Kirchenbauverein zu Heppingen" in 1898. On 1 April 1955, Heppingen left the parish of Heimersheim and, after persistent efforts, became an independent parish. Today, Heppingen is part of the parish of Bad Neuenahr Ahrweiler.
