Healing spring and healing water
The Great Bubbling Spring as a source of energy
Water stands for health like no other element and is the reason for Bad Neuenahr's worldwide reputation as a spa town. The state-recognised healing spring is natural, warm and soothing. From a depth of 95 metres and at a temperature of 34 degrees, the healing water bubbles to the surface in a fountain up to 10 metres high with the help of natural carbonic acid. Even when the "Great Fountain" was discovered in 1861, scientists were in agreement about its healing properties. Particularly rich in valuable minerals and trace elements, the healing water has been developing its health-promoting properties for over 150 years.
The Great Bubble - Treasure from the depths
In 1861, the "Großer Sprudel" was drilled in Bad Neuenahr, whose healing water established the spa's worldwide reputation as a "local remedy". To this day, it provides a gentle remedy for daily well-being.
Due to tectonic faults and other special geological conditions, the water reservoir of the Großer Sprudel has a high content of naturally bound carbonic acid. It is thanks to this high content of naturally bound carbon dioxide and the temperature of 34 degrees Celsius that a particularly large number of minerals and trace elements are dissolved from the deep layers of rock. Bad Neuenahr's healing water is rich in sodium, hydrogen carbonate, magnesium, natural carbonic acid and silicic acid. But of course it also contains many other valuable minerals and trace elements.
The first appearance of the healing water was quite explosive. When drilling for underground springs was carried out around 1861 in the area of today's Kurpark, the workers were in for a thunderous surprise: suddenly, masses of water, stones and carbon dioxide erupted from a depth of 95 metres: Bad Neuenahr's "Große Sprudel" ("Big Bubble") had been discovered! Even today, the gas emission of the carbonic acid is still so strong that the water bubbles to the surface in a fountain about 10 metres high. (Unfortunately, it cannot be experienced at present due to flood-related renovation work).

Healthy living with Bad Neuenahr healing water
Healing springs are only found in very specific areas in Germany and are a special gift of nature. A long time ago, the deep-lying water reservoir of the "Großer Sprudel" was filled with rainwater, which had previously been filtered, purified and, last but not least, mineralised on its long journey down through many layers of rock.
The mineral content of the water depends solely on the geological composition of the source. As the water from the "Großer Sprudel" has a particularly high mineral content, it is authorised to be called medicinal water. This high mineralisation has even been officially confirmed by the approval of Bad Neuenahr's medicinal water by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). The borehole, which led to the development of the "Großer Sprudel" as early as 1861, reaches 95 metres into the depths.
The effect of healing waters
Bad Neuenahr's healing water is characterised above all by its high content of naturally bound carbonic acid. This mainly promotes blood flow to the mucous membranes in the digestive tract, so that the time food spends in the stomach can be shortened and digestion accelerated. The promotion of smooth processes in our body has an enormous influence on our general well-being.
Bad Neuenahr healing water is particularly suitable for physically active people, as it can replace not only the mineral sodium but also the fluid excreted with sweat. In addition to providing refreshment, it therefore makes a major contribution to a good body feeling - before, during and after sport.
Bad Neuenahr healing water also contains a high proportion of silicic acid, which gently promotes the growth of hair and nails as well as the absorption of moisture in the skin. Taut skin, healthy hair and strong nails can therefore be achieved through a sufficient intake of silica-rich healing waters.
