Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

The eastern gateway to the town of Ahrweiler

Even today, the old town centre of Ahrweiler is surrounded by a wall almost 2 km long. The Ahr Gate, Nieder Gate, Adenbach gate and Ober Gate, which date back to the 13th century, still function as entrances. The town fortifications and all the gates are cultural monuments.

The eastern gate of the town fortifications, the Rhine Gate, is known as the Nieder Gate. With its four-storey centre tower and two flanking towers, it is the second largest gate in the city. There is a barrel vault and two portcullises in the gateway. St. Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of the Nieder Gate and the Niederhut, which leads from here into the city centre.
