A small gap in the rock with a special history in Altenahr
If you look towards the Ahr Mountains from the banks of the Ahr in Altenahr or from Are Castle opposite, you will recognise a small gap in a rock - the Teufelsloch. A popular photo motif, sought-after hiking destination and alpine-looking rocky path: the Teufelsloch is one of the top sights on the Middle Ahr. As spectacular as the Teufelsloch characterises the landscape, its origin is just as spectacular.
Legend has it that the devil once visited the Ahr valley and
and took such a liking to the land and the people, but above all to the excellent red wine
red wine that he did not want to return home. Then one day, while he was resting on the hill opposite Are Castle, his grandmother
in the guise of a beautiful maiden. In the arms of the
the enamoured devil, she quickly turned back into the unruly woman he knew all too well. This is how the Teufelsloch was created, which can still be seen today above Altenahr.
The ascent is possible via the ghost path behind the former railway tracks (see Altenahr map)
