St Laurentius Church
Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler
Hall church in Ahrweiler
St Laurentius Church in Ahrweiler is an important example of medieval sacred architecture and the oldest hall church in the Rhineland. It was built in the 13th century by Prüm Abbey, whose Benedictine monks looked after the parish for centuries. After secularisation at the beginning of the 19th century, pastoral care was transferred to secular priests and the parish has belonged to the diocese of Trier since 1824.
Architecturally, the church combines Romanesque and Gothic elements to create an impressive ensemble. The massive church tower and the three-nave hall interior characterise the image of the old town of Ahrweiler. Light-flooded church windows create a warm, spiritual atmosphere.
The Laurentiuskirche is not only a place of prayer, but also a cultural centre of the town. It symbolises the religious, historical and artistic identity of Ahrweiler - and invites visitors to experience this special combination of history, faith and architecture up close.
