St. Josef Chapel

Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

Chapel in Walporzheim

St. Josef Chapel in Walporzheim looks back on a long history: first mentioned in a document in 1660, parts of the current building date back to 1770, with an extension dating from 1924.  A statue of the Good Shepherd stands above the ornately framed main entrance, and a striking ridge turret with a curved cap adorns the slate-covered roof.

The interior features baroque wooden figures of St Sebastian and St Roch, which were once part of the original altar. Some of the leaded windows date from 1924, 1960 and 1971 - some with ornamental designs, others with depictions of saints by the artist Jakob Schwarzkopf. Particularly impressive: the ceiling fresco showing the Coronation of Mary, which was uncovered in 1989.

The organ in the gallery was last renewed in 2001. The Stations of the Cross, originally made of mosaic (1961), were replaced by sculptures in 1992.
