Saffenburg
Mayschoß
Excursion destination from the 11th century with a great view
Saffenburg Castle is located above Mayschoß and was first mentioned in a document in 1081. This makes it the oldest castle complex in the Ahr valley. The building blocks were hewn out of the rock on the spot. This created smooth, vertical rock faces, on whose wheel the castle buildings rose.
In the course of history, Saffenburg Castle was occupied twice: by Swedish troops in 1632 and by French troops in 1701. The French only got into the castle by trickery. At grape harvest time, when the three drawbridges were lowered so that the winegrowers could deliver the grapes, French officers disguised themselves as merchants and mingled with the winegrowers. This allowed them to enter the castle undisturbed and disarm the gatekeepers.
The castle's foundation walls have been preserved to this day. The site is looked after by a preservation society and the castle grounds are open to the public. A hut below the castle plateau is open from spring to autumn. The castle offers a magnificent 360° panoramic view of Mayschoß, the course of the River Ahr and the surrounding villages.
Open from 11 a.m. in September and October.
