Former Jewish house of prayer in Ahrweiler
The synagogue in Ahrweiler, built in Moorish style in 1894, was severely damaged during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and experienced a chequered history in the years that followed: After being destroyed and expropriated by the French occupation, it served as a fertiliser warehouse. In 1978, the Bürgerverein Synagoge e.V. was formed, which acquired the building in 1981 and extensively renovated it together with the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments until 1990. The original condition was largely restored.The synagogue has developed into an important meeting place for cultural events in the life of the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.
On 9 November 2008, the Bürgerverein Synagoge e.V. celebrated its 30th anniversary. In 1978, under the leadership of Pastor Hans Warnecke, an interest group was formed to look after the former Jewish place of worship. At the same time, the 70th anniversary of the "Reichspogromnacht" was also commemorated, which "triggered a steppe fire in Germany and heralded the deportation of the Jews."
