Arenberg Castle Ruins
Aremberg
The tower of the once mighty castle is enthroned on the Aremberg
A mighty castle was built on the summit of the Aremberg, which can be seen from afar, in the 12th century. Over time, it was expanded into an imposing fortress and replaced by a magnificent Baroque castle in the 18th century. The castle was captured by French troops in 1682, but was abandoned just one year later. Today, only the tower, built around 1854 from the rubble and remains of the walls, is a reminder of the once important fortification. A dedicated support organisation is working to preserve the tower and the historic site.
Aremberg is nestled in a charming hiking area. The AhrSteig award-winning hiking trail leads from Blankenheim directly through the town, past the castle ruins and on towards Eichenbach. Aremberg is also the starting point for the themed hiking trail "In the footsteps of Princess Margaretha", which runs for around 28 kilometres through the former principality and offers exciting insights into the history of the region.
